Written during Rails Rumble 2009, Yield the Floor takes the faster-than-realtime conversations of the internet and brings them to a more realistic level. For any conversation, only one person may speak at a time.
How is the style?
Do you like the functionality?
Are certain words confusing?
Hey there Brad, very cool to see your Rails Rumble entry here!
First thing I noticed was after signing up, in the edit profile page none of the text input boxes were aligned with each other. Quick fix would be to just make the labels into block elements via CSS so the text inputs are pushed down a line.
It's an interesting concept but I'm not sure how well-suited it is to the internet. It seems very contrary (by attempting to slow down interaction) to what usually happens online so maybe there is a place for this. I'd be very interested in hearing what you envision this being used for.
One thing that I'm very confused on so far is how the "floor" is passed around. It seems like in most topics it just bounces back and forth and won't allow you to reply to yourself. On one of the threads (the BizConf one) I requested the floor but was told the chair would notify me when I had the floor instead of being given the floor immediately like I was on others. Other than the fact that three people are involved I'm not sure what the difference is. Who is the chair? Why do I not get the floor when I request it on that one when I have not even commented on it previously? Maybe I'm just not up to speed on my parliamentary procedure haha!
You may want to update the div on the right side to explain a bit more about the app or add an about page. Not sure what the rules are on that in a Rails Rumble though.
UI could use some work, but given that you only have 48 hrs, I think that should come later.
I'm a bit confused with how yielding/requesting the floor works. I think there's a difference between 2 and 3 people, but not sure exactly how.
The concept is neat, however I'm not entirely certain how this can be applied on the internet in a
fast-paced, easy to understand way.
Thanks for the feedback. We've been hacking away at some bugs... should be easier to use soon.
